When the installation of sanitary sewers were first being discussed in early 2023, the project cost was well over budget. When the project rebid in mid 2023, ADS representatives presented a case to the owner and engineer for SaniTite HP to deliver exceptional cost and performance value. SaniTite HP meets ASTM F2764 for gravity-flow sanitary sewers and ASTM D3212 for watertight joints, which were important to the engineer.
After researching installation costs, market feedback indicated SaniTite HP provided a 35% reduction in material cost to the original bid. In addition to the savings, SaniTite HP’s light weight was a key factor in being chosen. The light weight thermoplastic pipe provided a safety factor on the job because it is easier to move, handle and ship.For the project over 8,600’ (2,600 m) of 18” (450 mm), 36” (900 mm) and 42” (1,050 mm) SaniTite HP was utilized in 13’ (3 m) lengths. The 13’ (3 m) lengths were utilized as a safety issue to keep the installation crew safe and within the shoring at all times.
After the installation was completed, the pipe runs were thoroughly air tested to ensure watertightness. All pipe runs - manhole to manhole - passed without an issue. On a specific 418’ (127 m) run of 42” (1,050 mm) pipe, Hunter Contracting filled the pipe with air to 4 psi (27.5 kPa) and had to hold the pressure for 28 minutes based on ASTM F1417. The pressurized pipe was checked after 33 minutes and had a pressure of 3.95 psi (27.2 kPa). The 0.05 psi (.3 kPa) loss easily met the ASTM standard, which allows for 1.0 psi (6.9 kPa) loss of a 30-minute span.
