Installation of an underground stormwater detention system featuring rows of orange corrugated chambers surrounded by stone aggregate at a Costco warehouse construction site. A worker stands between the chambers as equipment places additional stone.
Costco built a new warehouse grocery store and gas station to serve the Ventura County area. A stormwater management and treatment system was required for the large parking lot.

PRODUCTS USED

Solution

The project engineer, Kimley Horn, had specified StormTech frequently for stormwater management systems on other projects. Due to the familiarity with the product, Kimley Horn chose to use StormTech at the Costco warehouse and contacted Advanced Drainage Systems’ (ADS) representatives.

The ADS representatives saw StormTech was on the project, but a competitor’s product was on the plans for water quality. ADS asked Kimley Horn to look at EcoPure BioFilter as a water quality alternative.

ADS submitted sizing and pricing for eight EcoPure biofiltration systems to Kimley-Horn. The EcoPure BioFilter solution reduced the overall water quality treatment footprint, allowing the systems to fit within the parking lot islands while accommodating the required inlet and outlet configurations. The proposed systems also met the required treatment flow rates and provided a more cost-effective solution compared to alternative approaches.

After the StormTech and EcoPure BioFilters were chosen for the Costco site, ADS representatives were able to secure more products on the project.

• Four Nyloplast basins were added to capture the stormwater.

• 340’ (104 m) of 10” (250 mm) N-12 dual wall HDPE pipe was chosen for stormwater conveyance. 500’ (152 m) of 6” (150 mm) perforated N-12 dual wall was used for an underdrain on the StormTech system.

• 5 42” (1,050 mm) Flexstorm Pure filters and 10 48” (1,200 mm) Flexstorm Pure filters were used at the catch basins to capture all of the stormwater’s first flush.

In addition to being more cost effective and providing the needed requirements, ADS products were also easier to source. ADS has facilities near the site and could deliver the products as needed and in a timely fashion.
