A forested area in New Kent County was also turned into a large parking lot to be used as an automobile auction and repair site.
In order to construct the parking area, a stormwater system was needed to convey stormwater from the site. HP Storm was utilized to convey the stormwater after Shield Contracting convinced the site engineer to flip the specifications to the polypropylene pipe.
Shield Contracting had used HP Storm on other projects and knew that the plastic pipe had a much higher safety factor. In addition to fewer truckloads making the deliveries in a 2-3 day span, the pipe could be nested within each other for a smaller site footprint. HP Storm is also safer and faster to install and provided a cost savings.
The smaller diameters of HP Storm were installed around the site’s perimeter and fed the 36” (900 mm) main line. The main line then carried the stormwater to stormwater management ponds, which released the water to the surrounding forests at pre-development rates. Despite early reluctance to allow HP Storm on the project, the engineer was pleased with the high performance of the polypropylene pipe.
HP Storm polypropylene pipe provides superior pipe stiffness, longer bells and spigots and a premium joint performance for a longer service life. The smooth interior wall offers additional strength and high flow capacity. HP Storm pipe, available in diameters from 12”-60” (300-1500 mm) meets or exceeds the standards specified in ASTM F2881 and AASHTO M330 and the extended bell and spigot meets ASTM D3212. Polypropylene is resistant to the effects of chemicals, abrasion, hot soils and effluent.
