In addition, it’s one of the top 10 United States cargo airports and includes major hubs for UPS, FedEx and Prime, according to the airport.

The engineering firm of Burns and McDonnell was tasked with a $90 million runway/taxiway rehabilitation project of the airport’s southernmost runway and adjacent taxiways that would enhance the safety of millions of air travelers.

The rehabilitation required a robust stormwater conveyance/storage/recharge system. Burns and McDonnell reached out to ADS to see what products ADS could provide to handle the temporary loading weight of a 747-400 with a maximum takeoff weight of 875,000 pounds (396893 kg).

ADS’ engineering team recommended HP Storm pipe as the polypropylene pipe’s increased stiffness could handle the loading requirements needed. In addition, the ADS engineering team provided custom line layouts, which eliminated field cutting.

HP Storm pipe can also be perforated, which was essential for the airport. The 5,000’ (1,524 m) of 60” (1500 mm) pipe has a storage volume of 156,200 cubic feet (4,423 cubic meters). The pipe’s perforations would allow the stormwater to recharge the area’s groundwater.

HP Storm is a lightweight pipe, which provides jobsite safety when moving the pipe from the staging area to the installation site. HP Storm’s 20’ (6 m) 60” (1500 mm) stick weighs 1,040 pounds (471 kgs) compared to an equivalent length of RCP at 26,180 pounds (11,875 kgs). The lightweight characteristics of HP Storm made it easier for Coffman Specialties to handle the pipe twice as fast.

HP Storm was delivered inside the airport’s security fence for storage and moved about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from the storage site to the installation area. HP Storm pipe is very durable and handling it multiple times does not affect the pipe’s integrity, whereas handling RCP multiple times exposes the pipe, bell and spigot to unnecessary impact potentially causing cracks or other damage thus diminishing performance.

ADS HP Storm is manufactured for gravity-flow storm drainage applications and provides stiffness and premium joint performance. HP Storm’s proven dual-wall profile design provides superior performance and durability, is corrosion resistant and is unaffected by salts, chemicals, and hot soils.

Microsoft will be phasing out Internet Explorer soon. Because of this, we did not build the site to be used with IE. Please use Chrome, Edge or another browser to fully experience the new ADS website. .
